Description
The Winchester USA M855 5.56 ammunition features 62 grain, full metal jacket projectile capable of traveling 3020 feet per second giving it 1255 foot pounds of muzzle energy designed for training and plinking. This load features non-corrosive reloadable brass casing to improve feed reliability and prevent damage to the firearm’s chamber. The full metal jacket consists of a soft core, encased in a harder metal shell to maintain their composure and trajectory for greater penetration and less expansion.
The SS109 cartridge was chosen by NATO as the second standardized rifle cartridge after the 7.62x51mm. The SS109 was named M855 by the US military and is also called 5.56x45mm NATO. Recognized by its green-tip, the M855 is known as Penetrator ammo as the bullet was designed to meet the U.S Continental Army Command’s parameters for small-calibre, high velocity rifle ammunition which included penetration of a .135 inch steel plate at 500 yards. It is not, however, considered armour piercing. The armour piercing variant of 5.56 mm is the M995 which has a tungsten core and is painted with a black tip.

This round’s 62 grain bullet is just a little more special than your average FMJ. Sure, it’s got a gilding metal jacket to drive reliable feeding and help keep lead residue out of your barrel, but its core isn’t made of solid copper. The front half of the core is made of steel.
That obviously makes the bullet magnetic, but it also makes it much better able to pierce sheet metal. At close range a bullet like this has little trouble blasting through a 1/8” thick piece of steel. The penetrator bullet also has a habit of breaking in half as it bores into soft tissue. The resultant twin wound channel it can produce makes it a great choice for self-defense – especially if your threat has taken cover behind a door or vehicle.
